An Austin teenager was arrested July 22nd in connection with an Austin Ford vehicle theft.
Elias James Wells, 18, has been charged with second degree burglary – possessing tools, third degree burglary – property theft and crime theft – driving a motor vehicle without consent.
Police were dispatched to Austin Ford at around 6:36 a.m. on July 22, according to a court complaint. A clerk showed officers a broken window on a garage door, but a search of the building revealed nothing that was obviously out of place.
A damaged knife was found next to the broken window; It is believed that the knife was used to pry the window apart. There was a fresh shoe print on another door next to the garage door.
The employee later announced that a 2018 Dodge Challenger was stolen from the site.
An officer discovered the stolen Dodge around 2:57 p.m. on July 22nd as it was driving west on East Oakland Avenue. The officer even tracked the Dodge on a bike lane near the Austin city dog park before briefly losing sight of the vehicle. A witness then pointed to houses on the north side of 12th Avenue Southwest where the Dodge was found abandoned and parked in a driveway on the 100 block.
The residents of the house told the police they saw the Dodge pull into their driveway quickly, and then two white men and one black man got out and ran north.
Police found three key fobs for new vehicles in the center console and an Arby bag on the front floor with an uneaten sandwich and a receipt with a timestamp at 12:18 p.m. Detectives went to the Austin Arby location, where a Wells employee acted as the sole occupant of the vehicle when he was buying groceries in the passage.
The detectives contacted a Wells relative who said she had not seen him that day and that he was supposed to be working in Blooming Prairie. A detective contacted Wells’ workplace and learned that Wells hadn’t come to work that day.
Wells was arrested the next morning. A detective confiscated his shoes and found that they matched the shoe print on Austin Ford’s door.
Wells will reappear in court on August 5th.
