8-year-old boy, teenage girls among more than 50 shot across Chicago

CHICAGO – More than 50 people across Chicago were victims of gun violence this weekend, including an 8-year-old boy and several teenage girls. According to the police, at least 22 people were shot dead on Sunday, two of them fatal, on a weekend that continued to be violent for the city. Just before midnight, Chicago police said a group of people was standing on the sidewalk outside a party in the Austin neighborhood on the city’s west side when one or more people in a dark SUV started shooting. Six people were hit by bullets on the sidewalk near Ohio and Lavergne – four of them girls aged 12-15. According to the police, the girls’ injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to the hand and buttocks to a graze on the head. They were all taken to the hospital in fair condition. It was the second multiple-casualty shootout that weekend in the Austin neighborhood. One man was killed and three others injured late Friday night when police say three armed men opened fire near Lockwood and Huron. According to the police, the shooters started in a possibly gray Nissan. More than 50 people have been shot dead in Chicago since 6 p.m. on Friday, five of them fatal. The youngest victim – an 8-year-old boy who was driving a car with a 28-year-old man in Auburn Gresham around 1am on Sunday. According to police, someone shot them in a black SUV and hit them both.
