Larry Kenneth Verley
May 26, 1940 – October 23, 2021
Larry Kenneth Verley, 81, from Boerne, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021. A visitation will take place in the Holt & Holt Funeral Home on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 6th, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Boerne. Refreshments and fellowship will follow in the church family life center. The funeral with full military honors will be held at a later date in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Larry was born on May 26, 1940 near Riverton, Wyoming, on a farm near his father’s building. He is the son of Floyd L. and Fern Brines Verley. They lived on the homestead until January 1950 when they moved to Riverton.
In July 1961, he married his high school mistress, former Veronica L. McCauley, daughter of LM (Jack) and Grace Jenkins. Larry attended school in both Shoshoni and Riverton. As a teenager, Larry played high school football and American Legion baseball.
He worked hard to fund his education in jobs such as milk delivery, school janitor, miner camp cook, surveyor for the Wyoming Highway Department, and general work in the cafeteria of the University Campus Shop. After graduating from high school in 1958, he enrolled at the University of Wyoming, where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1962. He participated in the College Air Force’s ROTC program and served as a lieutenant upon graduation.
He later earned a Masters of Business Administration from Michigan State University. He served a total of 21 years, including stints at Robins AFB, Georgia; O’Fallon, Illinois; Hawaii; Air Force Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama; and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. His last post was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1983.
After retiring from the Air Force, Larry used his extensive auditing experience to work as a cost analyst for various companies in Palm Bay, Florida; Harlingen, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Cocoa Beach, Florida. He and Veronica moved to Boerne, Texas, in 2004, where they lived until Larry’s death.
Larry was a determined person from the beginning of his life as a farm boy. He grew up not only to be a determined young man, but also one with a strong sense of decency and compassion. Always considerate, caring, and compassionate, Larry balanced a strong commitment to serve in any position he held with that of a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful friend. He loved those he loved, and it showed in words and deeds.
Retirement gave him the opportunity to explore and expand his faith and service calling through various church groups and the First United Methodist Church of Boerne Stephen Ministry. Retirement also gave him more opportunities to do what he loved most, including time fishing and camping outdoors, tending his vegetable gardens, writing poetry, and researching family history. Whether raising your own children or looking after your granddaughter, no job was too big or too small. Mentoring and life lessons have always been based on a high set of values.
He is survived by his wife, Veronica Verley; Son Craig Verley and wife Ana in Mission, Texas and their son Dylan Weeks in New York, New York; Daughter Anita Verley of Boerne, Texas and daughter Caitlin Lucille Bumgarner of Austin, Texas; Sister Mina Verley Rauch of Silverton, Oregon; and brother Leigh Verley and wife, Jean, of Bullhead City, Arizona.
In death he was preceded by his parents and brother Duane Verley.
Instead of flower reminders, the family asked for donations to the Stephen Ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Boerne to honor Larry’s memory.
The arrangements are supervised and managed by the staff of the Holt & Holt Funeral Home of Boerne. To share words of comfort with family, please visitwww.holtfh.com.
