Poll rates McConaughey favorably

TEXAS – He hasn’t announced a run and he doesn’t have party affiliation. Still, according to the results of a new Quinnipiac University poll, Texans are significantly in favor of actor and Austin resident Matthew McConaughey running for governor in 2022.
When it comes to favorability for potential candidates for either governor or Texas attorney general, according to the poll, Gov. Greg Abbott leads the pack with 49%. McConaughey is right behind him, however, with a 42% favorability rating.
Coming in third was former congressman Beto O’Rourke at 34% favorable.
It should be noted that McConaughey’s unfavorable rating is 20% while Abbott’s is considerably higher at 43%. Thirty-six percent reported they “haven’t heard enough” about McConaughey.
Given that neither McConaughey nor O’Rourke have announced bids to unseat Abbott, all of this is a bit speculative.

Appearing on a March 2021 episode of Crime Stoppers of Houston’s The Balanced Voice podcast, when asked about it, the Academy Award winner said it’s a “true consideration.”
“Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?” McConaughey said.
Back in November 2020, while appearing on The Hugh Hewitt Show, the actor and philanthropist, who has no experience in politics, said his running for office would ultimately be up to the people of Texas.
“I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me,” McConaughey said. “I would say this: Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”
In preparing the poll Quinnipiac surveyed 1,009 registered Texas voters between June 15 and 21. The poll has a margin of error of three percentage points.
