A city and several counties in Florida require masks for city employees.

TEXAS, USA – Houston became the first city to issue a mask mandate for city workers despite an order from the Texas governor. The mandate comes into force on Wednesday 4th August.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said employees do not need to wear a mask when alone in their office or cubicle when they are two meters from the nearest cubicle or work area. There will also be exceptions for health and religious reasons.

KHOU reported that the mandate only applies to City of Houston employees as the mayor cannot prescribe masks for residents under Governor Greg Abbott’s ordinance.

Governor Greg Abbott doubles the mask and vaccine mandate ban in a new ordinance

Abbott’s July 29 order restricts any state or local government agency and any public or private entity that receives or will receive public funding in any way by mandating masks or requiring proof of vaccination. Any government agency or official who defies the order will be fined up to $ 1,000.

When asked for comment, the City of Austin made the following statement:

“Masking is recommended for all employees and many follow this recommendation. We are definitely watching what is happening in Houston and other major cities to see what works and what we can do here in Austin. “

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also prevented local governments from imposing mask orders. However, according to Forbes, the city of Palm Beach and Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando counties require masks on local government buildings.

Texas and Florida accounted for a third of all coronavirus cases in the country last week.

Other cities in the United States also mandate masks, although they don’t see any increase on the levels of Texas and Florida. San Francisco and six other Bay Area counties announced Monday that they are reintroducing a mask mandate for all indoor public spaces, The Associated Press reported. The mayor of Atlanta last week signed an ordinance mandating the wearing of masks indoors, including in private businesses.
