HS Countdown to Kickoff: Rattlers to end season at Austin Akins
[ad_1]
Austin Akins will lead a new head coach for the first time in 10 years.
The Eagles battled with a 1-7 and 0-6 district game overall in 2020, including a 21-0 loss at San Marcos in the season finale. Like rattles, Akins hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2017. The team is hoping head coach Joe Isaacs will take the lead and that will soon change. The squad lost 25 graduates, but remembered 17 returnees, including 8 starters. 4 are offensive and 4 are defensive.
The offensive line must be one of the better units in the district, backed up by a 6’6, 300 lb Kentucky commit Nicholas Hall. He is supported by Junior Isaac Gonzalez and Senior Cordan Melder, who also play on the defensive. However, the offensive has to fill the gaps. Second grade Dillon Lofton can move up and get the first chance behind the center. He will throw senior wide receiver Michael Thorn.
Defense depends on multiple players on either side of the ball. Senior linebacker / running back Skylar Cope-Duval, linebacker / wide receiver Zach Cagle and defensive back / wide receiver Kimani Smith must all do their part.
San Marcos will travel to Austin on November 5th to play the Eagles. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine predicts Akins will be ranked 8th in District 26-6A and 7th among the Ratlers.
