AUSTIN, TX – Governor Greg Abbott has appointed six new members to the Texas Energy Reliability Council, which was formed in June to help prevent emergency energy issues following the February winter storms.
Abbott announced Tuesday that his appointments include Brad Jones, interim CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, as well as representatives from Samsung, Valero and HEB from each of Texas’s four largest metros.
Senate Bill 3, drafted by Senator Charles Schwertner of Georgetown during the regular 2021 legislature, mandates the council to oversee “weathering the power grid and improving communications in the energy sector”.

The council is one of several provisions of the new law aimed at “preparing, preventing and responding to weather emergencies and power outages,” according to the text of the bill.
Other mandates include “creating a civil penalty for disrupting the supply of natural gas to residential customers during an extreme weather emergency” and requiring energy suppliers to weather their systems and practice them for various emergencies.
