A Guide to the Restaurants Opening at Austin’s St. Elmo Public Market

St. Elmo Public Market, a huge 40,000-square-foot space dubbed Austin’s version of New York’s Chelsea Market and Seattle’s Pike Place Market, is slated to finally open this year. Located at 4329 South Congress Avenue in the St. Elmo neighborhood in the East Congress neighborhood, the market will host new concepts and new locations from some of Austin’s best restaurants.
The St. Elmo project was announced in 2015, so there is great anticipation for the market, which is a former school bus factory and furniture store. The opening was originally planned for 2018. Adding to the excitement are superstar tenants such as a new restaurant for the award-winning southern restaurant Olamaie and a wine bar extension for the East Austin butcher and the Salt & Time restaurant. Two original tenants have dropped out (see below), but a representative from the market announced that the entire space has already been rented to both local and non-local companies.
Here’s a full guide on what to expect from the hotly anticipated market when it opens this year (cross your fingers).
Olamaie and Little Olas owner and James Beard Award finalist chef Michael Fojtasek contributes to St. Elmo at Mignette, a diner and a bakery. The Mignette is an all-day dining restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner for dine-in service and a to-go counter. Options include light veggies, sandwiches, southern meat, and three plates (like fried chicken steak and three sides), and cookies and gravy. The focus is on the bakery led by Carlyle Watt, previously head baker at Fire Island Rustic Bake Shop in Anchorage, Alaska, and James Beard 2017 semi-finalist for Outstanding Baker. Watt bakes bread, pastries and croissants, which are a mix of seasonal products from Texas and French techniques. Mignette will also have St. Elmo’s only cocktail bar.

The East Seventh Butcher, Restaurant, and Wine Bar expands to St. Elmo with a butcher, grocery stall, and wine bar. The product stand will showcase products from local farmers (this is a familiar environment for Salt & Time as the restaurant had moved to a grocery store during the COVID-19 pandemic). Wines curated by the restaurant’s new beverage director, Erika Widmann, are presented in the wine bar.
Fire dance pizza
Fire Dance Pizza Hawaiian farmer’s market stall is opening its first restaurant in the States region in the market. The stand is known for wood-fired pizza with a sourdough crust.
The Hill Country nonprofit coffee chain also opens in the market. Greater Good strives to source beans ethically and donates a portion of the proceeds from each bag to one of four Austin nonprofits. If the St. Elmo location is like the other Austin cafes, they serve coffee beverages, tea, pastries, and bags of coffee beans.
No longer part of St. Elmo
Lick Honest Ice Creams: The local ice cream chain Lick wanted to open a new restaurant in St. Elmo, but that no longer happens.
Family Business Beer Co .: Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles’ Dripping Springs brewery is still planning to open a taproom on the Austin city limits, but it will no longer be part of St. Elmo.
