A tropical paradise tucked in Austin’s Tiki Tatsu-ya

[ad_1]

Nicole recently enjoyed dinner and drinks at Tiki Tatsu-ya, the long-awaited tiki bar that opened its doors in South Lamar in October.

She was overwhelmed through the island decor, the spiritual child of the duo Tatsu and Shion Aikawa. (Well worth reading this Eater Austin story about how the owners treated the Tiki genre and concerns about cultural appropriation and abuse of Polynesian mythological imagery.)

  • From the moment You walk through the doors and enter the cavernous dining room, you are transported to a tropical sanctuary with rock walls and fishing nets. The centerpiece is a two-story Shisa Dragon rock fountain.
  • Nicole was sitting in a cozy alcove near the main bar, bathed in red and blue light and with a top notch selection of rum.

Wait to the extensive cocktail menu during your culinary experience. Its thick cardboard sides can be opened on both sides and provide additional drink options.

🍍 Nicole and her loved one shared the Aku Aku, a refreshing cocktail made with mint, mixed fruits, rum and brandy. It is served in a pineapple on dry ice. So mysterious!

For food: The pu-pu platter offers a range of dishes to share: barbecue beef skewers, mochiko wings, yokozuna ribs, crab lagoon, taro tots, and house pickles.

đź‘€ The tots Come with a delicious fermented coconut ranch. In addition, the mochiko wings have a kick and are grilled to perfection. Nicole recommends repurposing the ranch and dipping your wings in too.

🍣 If you want Try the Lomi Lomi Tataki for a light flavor combination with salmon with tomatoes, pesto, onions, sea beans and a hint of mint. The Slingin ‘Shrimp Musubi also offers tempura shrimp and nori-wrapped rice topped with shiso and honey umeboshi.
