Austin City Limits Festival performer Machine Gun Kelly was spotted by an eagle-eyed tipster leaving Walton’s Fancy & Staple restaurant downtown last weekend. The Texas Food & Wine Alliance is currently accepting culinary grant applications in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The organization awards scholarships to those involved in the food / beverage / related industries, from chefs to beer producers to business owners. The application deadline is Sunday, October 24th at midnight, and the award winners will be notified on Tuesday, November 23rd at 5:00 pm. A ceremony will take place on Monday December 13th. Nominations are also accepted by email to info@texasfoodandwinealliance.org.
Then the Texas Conference for Women and the Texas Restaurant Association are giving away $ 200,000 in grants specifically designed for women-run businesses. The two organizations will award $ 2,500 to over 80 companies. Applications are now being accepted.

Austin Bakery opens a pop-up cake shop in Lakeway
Austin bakery mini-chain Tiny Pies opened a pop-up location in the Lakeway area in August. The 2125 Lohman’s Crossing, Suite 402 location will be operational through the end of the year. Co-owners Amanda Wadsworth and Kit Seay plan to eventually convert the address into a permanent location. This is the fourth location after Burnet Road, South Lamar and the most recent location in Westlake. Its opening times are daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The fermentation festival is back
The Austin Fermentation Festival at Texas Farmers’ Market is back in October. There will be weekly online workshops and a month-long silent auction that will benefit the market and its farm producer support fund. The workshops are free to attend, although a $ 10 donation is recommended, and they take place virtually on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Upcoming sessions include Sheena Moore from Sheenas Pickles, Uyen Pham from Killer Kimchi, David Norman from Easy Tiger and Alfred Francese from Emmer & Rye.

New York pizzeria expands to Austin
Grimaldi’s, an Arizona-based pizzeria chain that bought the iconic New York location in 2019, is opening a full restaurant in Austin this fall. However, this is not the first location in Austin; Since the beginning of this year it has been operating a to-go operation in the Ghost Kitchen Hub Kitchen United Mix. The menu includes charcoal oven pizzas, calzones and desserts. There will be indoor and outdoor seating. It is located at Domain Northside, 11700 Domain Boulevard, Suite 148, open from 11am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and 11am to 10pm Friday through Saturday.

Another new cocktail delivery service appears in Austin
Starting in September, there’s a new cocktail delivery service in Austin with the debut of Cantaloupe Island Draft Cocktails. The business was started by Richard Thomas who had worked in New York bars and restaurants like Heavy Woods. There are more than 36 cocktails on the menu, including the Amarguita with mezcal, campari, thyme, grapefruit and lime; the Memento Mori with white tequila, passion fruit liqueur, lime and guajillo chili; Mojito; Negronis; and whiskey sour. Spirits were selected with the local Austin Shaker retail store.
Zilker Hotel houses ACL-linked beer garden
The South Austin Hotel Carpenter opens a temporary beer garden for ACL weekends. From Friday, October 8th to Sunday, October 10th, pretzels, sausages, beer and wine are sold from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Tex-Mex restaurant changes its name
The Tex-Mex cuisine at Tex-Mex restaurant Cyclone Anaya changed its name to Valencia’s Tex-Mex garage over the summer, Community Impact reports. There are two locations, one in the domain and the original in Houston.
Taco chain creates Black Puma’s taco special
The Austin-born chain Torchy’s Tacos has created a special tortilla from October 1st in honor of the ACL Fest and Grammy-nominated band Black Pumas. One dollar from every taco sale goes to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. The taco will be available through Sunday, October 10th in the Downtown, South Congress and South Lamar locations.
