2020 winner Derrolyn Anderson wrote the winning short film “Flora’s Place”, a spooky story of a haunted tavern in California Gold country. Affinity Creative worked with a. together Hollywood Screenwriter, Madeline Rooksto turn Anderson’s story into a real script.

Flora’s Place was familiar with the production of cinematic product and lifestyle videos, but it was Affinity’s first foray into narrative filmmaking. Directed and shot by a cameraman Trevor Hooper, with creative support from Digital Media Director Justin Witt, the team relied on adaptability and instinct to complete the film. In the true spirit of the scary season, Affinity shot the 15-minute short film in three overnight sessions with a skeleton crew. Figuring out how to safely blow up a lightbulb and achieve practical effects, such as rigging sets to create the illusion of doors or other props that didn’t exist, required arduous problem solving.

As with all project challenges, the Affinity team met these with excitement, energy and enthusiasm. The short film premiered on Saturday 23 October, at Austin Film festival with a standing ovation from the participants, followed by a short question-and-answer session.

Justin Witt commented: “It was an absolute pleasure to be part of such a historic festival. The quality and creativity of all participants was amazing and we felt honored to be welcomed into such good company. Congratulations and a big thank you to our customer, host and festival sponsor, Bogle Vineyards! “
