The Zoning and Platinting Commission denied a request from the Zydeco Development Corporation to rededicate 5 acres of land to build an apartment complex called The Rhett for affordable housing.

The property at 1000 East Yager Lane, Austin, is vacant land surrounded by a residential area of single-family homes and maisonettes to the north; the Yager Technology Center and the Yager Food Store to the east; a townhouse complex known as Coppertree to the south; and more single family homes in the west.

The applicant planned that The Rhett would be 2.68 acres and contain 250 units. In addition, the applicant planned for The Rhett to participate in the Affordability Unlocked program.

The main reason the Commissioners reject the application is that the re-zoning is based on the applicant’s desire to build a 64-foot building if the current zoning allows for 60 feet. The additional 4 feet would have been intended for aesthetic purposes only, according to city documents.
