AUSTIN, TX – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced the grand opening of the Texas Department of Agriculture’s newly renovated cattle export facility in Del Rio on Wednesday. Since taking office, Commissioner Miller has made upgrading existing export facilities a top priority, and has done so successfully in Houston and Del Rio.
TDA has five cattle export facilities across the state that act as gateways for the export of cattle from Texas. Each facility provides cattle buyers and sellers with a location on the Texas border where animals can be kept until inspection and export requirements are met.
“These export facilities are tools for getting Texan cattle around the world,” said Commissioner Miller. “I am proud of my department for taking the initiative to build these world-class facilities.”
TDA export facilities are storage and control points for livestock leaving the country. Once the animals have been cleared for travel, they can be loaded for transport out of the United States. Cattle leaving the Brownsville, Del Rio, El Paso and Laredo facilities are loaded into Mexico for overland transport. The Houston facility moves livestock by air and sea and covers destinations around the world.
The TDA’s grand opening event included a local priest blessing the stalls and cutting the ribbon. Commissioner Miller also presented the City of Del Rio with a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community Certificate and presented a plaque to the family of a longtime TDA employee at the Del Rio Export Facility.
“My people here at TDA and I cannot thank the City of Del Rio enough for their support on this project,” said Miller. “They are an integral part of the safe export of Texan cattle and I know this new facility will help create lasting positive export relationships.”
