TSA encourages passengers to arrive two or three hours before boarding.
AUSTIN, Texas – Nearly 4 million Texans are expected to travel this July 4th holiday weekend, a new all-time high, according to travel forecast data from AAA Texas.
July 4th is expected to be the slowest day for the holiday weekend, but Monday is expected to start things up again.
If you walk through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, you will quickly find two groups of people: those flying for the first time since the pandemic and those who scratched the itch of travel long ago.
“I’m a little nervous. I hope I don’t have a panic attack, but we’ll see,” said traveler AJ Eclair.
“We went to Vegas in October,” said the traveler Roberto Barron. “It was nice. And months ago we went to Hawaii and it was crazy so we got here early.”
This July 4th, the queues at the TSA checkpoints were short. According to the airport spokesman, it will probably be the slowest travel day on this holiday weekend with almost 19,800 passengers.
On Saturday, 20,484 people reached a flight at the airport. And Friday was one of the busiest days since the pandemic, with 27,312 passengers.
For comparison: On the Friday before Memorial Day in 2019, 28,852 passengers came.
Each passenger has their own reason for air travel. For Eclair, it’s the first time in over a year that it’s a family reunion in Hawaii.
“I can finally hug her and I’m not afraid of infecting her,” said Eclair.
For Roberto and Lupita Barron, it’s the start in Las Vegas.
“It’s my birthday so I have to be there,” said Barron.
The TSA recommends that passengers arrive two or three hours before boarding. Also, check your carry-on bag to make sure there are no prohibited items.
The @ AUStinAirport spokesman said the slowest travel day of the vacation weekend will be July 4th with 19,789 travelers today.
