Amazon invested over $ 5.5 billion in the Austin metropolitan area from 2010-2020, and the company plans to continue growing in the area with the opening of its fifth delivery hub in 2022.
On Aug. 9, Amazon announced that company officials had signed a lease for a 315,000-square-foot delivery station at 10000 Decker Lane, Austin, south of Hwy. 290. The company plans to complete construction in the first half of 2022, said operations public relations manager Daniel Martin. Amazon will hire over 200 full-time and part-time employees. Over 11,000 people work for Amazon in the Austin area, Martin said.
Amazon has delivery locations in Pflugerville, Southeast Austin, Buda and Round Rock. When a customer buys a product from the company’s website, an employee picks up the product from a fulfillment center, Martin said. The article next goes to a sorting center and is sorted by zip code. The last step is a delivery station, the last mile before customer deliveries to the area. Amazon has a sorting center in Kyle and a fulfillment center in Pflugerville will open in October.
In making the decision to build a fifth delivery station, Martin considered that there had been increased customer demand, support from state and local executives, and the existence of a talented local workforce.
“Does it make sense not only for the customer to bring a new facility into this community, but also for the community and those who would work there?” Said Martin. “This facility checks all of these boxes.
Amazon also released data dated Aug. 9 from its latest economic impact report, which said the company hired more than 70,000 full-time and part-time workers nationwide by the end of 2020. As a result of Amazon’s development, over 136,000 jobs have been created nationwide, including construction, transportation, retail, health and hospitality jobs, according to a press release.
According to the economic report, Amazon has invested $ 29 billion in the state, including through infrastructure work, employee compensation and the development of the company, Martin said. These investments have grossed more than $ 34 billion in the Texan economy.
“We’re not just talking about Amazon employees, but when we have 70,000 employees in the state, they have to have lunch somewhere,” Martin said. “[We] have external liner drivers and delivery service partners, they have to hire staff, and to build facilities you need all of them [construction] and commissioned work. “
