AUSTIN (KXAN) – American Airlines announced plans on Tuesday to break the ground for a new lounge at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
The 15,000 square meter “Admirals Club” will have space for more than 250 customers and, according to the airline, will be the largest airport lounge in Austin.
The airline says the inspiration for the lounge design was “taken from the city itself” and intended to reflect the “urban fabric” of Rainey Street and local parks, as well as art and music. Local musicians are expected to entertain customers in the lounge.
1.2 million passengers flew through Austin Airport in September, an increase of 190% compared to 2020
“We can’t wait to bring these exciting new amenities to our passengers,” said Jacqueline Yaft, CEO of the airport, in a press release. “The new Admirals Club strengthens American Airlines’ investment in AUS and will provide travelers with an upscale experience that reflects the culture, music and art that Austin locals and visitors alike love.”
The airline’s existing lounge will remain open during the construction of the new club. The start of construction is planned for next year, an opening date will be announced at a later date.
Admirals Club Lounges are membership based. Passengers traveling on American Airlines or Oneworld Alliance flights can also purchase a day pass for the lounges.
American Airlines is the second largest airline in AUS by number of passengers. By September 2021, more than 1.9 million passengers had flown through the airport on an American flight, followed by Southwest Airlines with more than 3 million.
The airline announced in June that it would add 10 new domestic and four new international routes from Austin this fall. That was in addition to 10 other new routes announced in March.
