The Innovator Awards are given to dormitory owners, developers, operators, architectural firms and universities for outstanding achievements in the development, marketing and operation of dormitories. More than 100 industry experts evaluated more than 140 submissions in this year’s competition. This was the largest number of submissions to date.

ACC has received the following on-campus awards for 2021:

  • Best Public-Private Financing Solution On Campus: Manzanita Square at San Francisco State University – ACC saw a tremendous opportunity to provide development and financial expertise and support to a dedicated project team in the California State University Systems’ first equity-funded public-private partnership . After 22 months of construction, Manzanita Square opened its doors in August 2020. The academically oriented residential complex with 584 beds is a real win-win-win situation for the project team, the university and its students.
  • Best implementation of mixed-use / live learning on campus: UIC Academic and Residential Complex – The ARC houses more than 550 UIC students and offers a purpose-built, academically-oriented living environment and classrooms in the heart of the campus. The facility provides residents with modern spaces to live, study and thrive, including 50,000 square feet of academic space, including study rooms, classrooms, study rooms and tutoring centers.
  • Best New Development On Campus: University of Illinois Chicago Academic and Residential Complex – In Spring 2017, UIC contracted ACC to supply the Academic and Residential Complex (ARC), which is the first phase of the university’s revitalization initiative. Developed as a public-private partnership between UIC and ACC, the ARC was delivered in autumn 2019 after a construction period of 20 months.
  • Best architecture on campus: UIC Academic and Residential Complex – campus-wide connection is reinforced by transparency between the internal program rooms and the external environment. The common rooms are clearly visible and concentrated on the ground floor to encourage and expand the community’s learning environment. The facade and interior of the community reflect the geometric architecture seen across campus, celebrating the university’s urban context while maintaining a residential college aesthetic.

“It is an honor to be recognized along with our innovative university partners for two communities, Manzanita Square and the UIC Academic and Residential Complex, who also create an environment that is conducive to academic success and the personal well-being of our students” said Bill Bayless, CEO at ACC. “Our ACC team members across the country have continued to focus on fulfilling our mission of putting students first and creating a place they enjoy living.”

Bayless keyed the conference on Wednesday, July 14th at the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas. Since 2013, ACC has received a total of 43 SHB Innovator Awards.
