APD releases a shooting video recorded by officers in NE Austin after a delay

APD said it initially did not publish this video during the 60-day period due to production delays due to the backlog of previously delayed video releases.

The Austin Police released a video of the shooting in northeast Austin on Friday July 30th.

On Thursday, APD announced that it has started a public release process for a Critical Incident Community Briefing video showing the shooting by officials that took place on Friday, April 9, 2021, at block 6300 of East US Highway 290 on the Westbound Frontage Road in northeast Austin.

These initial tours include attendees and consulted parties of next of kin, family members, lawyers, involved officials, and city officials.

APD said it initially did not publish this video during the 60-day period due to production delays due to the backlog of previously delayed video releases. This is a 21-day extension of the previously specified July 8th release date.

The officers significantly involved in this critical incident are identified as:

  • Officer Jon Riordan – two and a half years of service with APD
  • Officer Kingly Kong – two years of service with APD

These officials were initially placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with APD guidelines. Officer Kong is now back on duty. Officer Riordan remains on restricted duty due to the injuries sustained in the incident. APD says it is working with the Office of Police Oversight and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office to release this video.

According to the police, the incident was captured with a camera worn on the body and the camera in the police vehicle’s car.

According to the police, the video material contains relevant audio and video material from the ongoing investigation.

“The video of a critical incident is intended to provide our community with additional context about the event. In accordance with state laws that prohibit the publication of certain information and maintain the integrity of the interdepartmental investigation, the video has been edited or redacted,” said APD in a press release. “The edited video contains extensive footage of the officers’ actions.”

Police said the police-affected shootings occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, April 9, in block 6300 of the westbound access road for EUS 290. The officers were dispatched to the area after Austin 911 made a “Gun Hotshot” call had received.
