AUSTIN, Texas – Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) appreciates travelers planning ahead and arriving early during what is expected to be the busy Thanksgiving travel season.

In view of increased vaccination rates and the need to catch up due to the many postponements in their vacation travel plans from last year, AUS advises travelers to expect a much busier terminal experience and plan accordingly when it comes to the airport. This applies to the entire holiday travel season from Friday, November 19th. until Monday, November 29th

Travelers who may not have flown in a long time, especially families traveling with children, should familiarize themselves with some of the changes that have taken place in AUS due to COVID-19.

After several record days in October, it is particularly important to plan enough time for parking, returning rental cars, baggage checks, obtaining boarding passes and security checks, especially in the morning hours for travelers before 9 a.m.

The Transportation Security Administration recommends that travelers arrive at least three hours early on all flights, including those with TSA PreCheck and Clear. Security checks open at 3:30 a.m. with TSA PreCheck and Clear Screening at checkpoints 1 and 2.

When travelers are dropped off in the morning, they can use both the upper and lower curbs to relieve traffic – from the lower level, passengers can use escalators and elevators to quickly go up to the ticket and to the security checkpoint.

Travelers wishing to park on-site should plan ahead as parking spaces are expected to fill up quickly. Limited reservations for the Blue Garage and Red Garage are available online. When reservations are sold out, roll-up options may be available. Travelers should visit ABIAParking.com to reserve a parking space and check real-time parking availability before arriving at the airport.

Passengers who require assistance in wheelchairs should contact their airline directly prior to arriving at the airport to arrange wheelchair service at the terminal.

For those packing any Christmas items, including leftovers on the way home, TSA rules on liquids still apply, so any food that might be considered liquid, such as gravy or cranberry sauce, should be safely packed in checked baggage. In addition, firearms are prohibited at passenger control checkpoints and in hand baggage, and possession of them may result in arrest. For a comprehensive list of prohibited and permitted items in carry-on baggage, visit the TSA website at TSA.gov.

A reminder that all Allegiant and Frontier flights should operate at the South Terminal and their passengers should park at the South Terminal. All other airlines operate from the airport’s main Barbara Jordan terminal on SH 71. The South Terminal is a separate facility accessed from Burleson Road between US 183 South and FM 973.

Face masks are required at both terminals for travelers two years of age or older as the TSA extended the face mask requirement for individuals to all transportation networks in the United States, including airports, through January 18, 2022.

In the terminal, travelers can explore new digital maps that provide real-time information on everything from locations to garage locations, stores, restaurants to route-finding options. On the map, passengers can also see the latest shop and restaurant opening times, view menus and order food deliveries at the airport from selected AUS concessions.

The map is mobile and desktop-friendly and can be accessed on the AUS website and at AirportMaps.AustinTexas.gov.
