AUSTIN (KXAN) – As tourist traffic increases for the July 4th weekend and COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed, airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration see an increase in in-flight or tarmac disruption across the country.

There are increasing reports of recalcitrant passengers, but the trend doesn’t necessarily apply in Austin.

Added 7 nonstop flights to Austin Airport through Allegiant Air

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has had eight security incidents since the beginning of the year, but those incidents have increased in the past three months.

However, the airport reports an increase in firearms detected during security checks. Wearing a mask in the airport remains a federal obligation.

An AUS spokesman estimated that 26,000 people passed the airport on Thursday and around 28,000 passengers were expected on Friday, which is close to the 2019 Memorial Day numbers.
