Abbott sets out the welcome mat
for the Delta variant in Texas
When my wife and I booked our first visit to Austin in November to mark our 50th anniversary, we looked forward to staying in a good hotel, dining in a variety of restaurants, and enjoying the city’s much-acclaimed music and entertainment scene. Unfortunately we have to cancel our reservations today.
Why? The string of executive orders from Governor Greg Abbott to limit or ban attempts to reduce the count of the COVID-19 virus appears to us little more than a welcome mat inviting the Delta variant of the virus to Texas. Although we are vaccinated, we see no reason to expose ourselves to such an environment.
So we won’t. Losing our planned spending in Texas is California profit.

Texas needs a balance of power
so that all sides have a voice
There should be a balance of power in our democratic republic to ensure that both sides have a voice. The Texas Supreme Court is made up entirely of Republicans. Who speaks for the opposition?
We have a stubborn governor who lacks foresight, a well-known showman as lieutenant governor, and an alleged crook as attorney general.
Freezing in the dark and dysfunctional with COVID is not good governance, Mr. Abbott.
The claim that the elderly are expendable shows a lack of critical thinking and compassion, Mr. Patrick.
An innocent person charged with a crime would want their day in court as soon as possible. It’s been six years, Mr. Paxton.
Is that really the portrayal that Texans want?

COVID deaths could lead to
Abbott is literally losing support
Governor Abbott’s staff and / or his re-election committee should remind the medically ignorant governor that he is likely to lose votes in the upcoming election.
Why? Because many of his potential voters may have already died of COVID. And more could be near death due to its daring executive orders prohibiting local leaders from making potentially life-saving decisions regarding the use of masks and vaccinations.
His supporters, who managed to overcome COVID despite Abbott’s ignorance, will surely (hopefully) turn against him in the election. We hope there are enough of us left to do the same.

Texas new six-week abortion ban
shifts enforcement to the public
Senate Law 8 went one step further in banning abortion, an essential part of women’s health care.
The heartbeat detection aspect of the bill not only leads to a near-complete ban on abortion, the bill shifts enforcement to the public.
The goal of the bill is to drive abortion providers – like my beloved Planned Parenthood – out of the state. Senate Law 8 affects low-income communities as they are unable to travel to other states to have an abortion.
The anti-abortion culture calls for respect for life. They believe that life begins as a fetus. This idea that a fetus is “life” is shared by most, if not all, Christian religions. But not all religions. Legislatures have nothing to do with endorsing the views of some religions towards others.
Anti-abortion laws violate women’s fundamental right to privacy.
