As everyone who lives here knows, the Austin metropolitan area’s population is constantly exploding.
New figures from the US Census Bureau put this explosive growth into clearer perspective. 2020 census data, released Aug. 12, shows that Austin is now the 28th most populous metropolitan area in the United States (2,283,371 residents), outperforming Las Vegas (29th with 2,265,461 residents) to be 27th Place approaching Pittsburgh (population 2,370,930). . Austin and Las Vegas essentially traded places, with Las Vegas finishing 28th in 2019 and Austin 29th.
Of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country, Austin saw the largest population jump from 2010 to 2020 (33 percent), with Houston fifth (20.3 percent), Dallas-Fort Worth sixth (20 percent) and San Antonio seventh (19.4 percent). Austin ranked second among metropolitan areas of all sizes for population growth for that decade, behind The Villages, Florida, a senior community 55 and over (39 percent).
Dallas-Fort Worth remains the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country (7,637,387 residents at the 2020 census), Houston retains its position 5 (7,122,240 residents) and San Antonio is still 24th (2,558,143 residents).
All four major subways in the state rose among the largest US regions from 2010 to 2020.
According to the 2010 census, Dallas-Fort Worth was the sixth largest metropolitan area in the country (6,366,542 residents), Houston was 8th (5,920,416), San Antonio was 26th (2,142,508) and Austin was 37th (1,716. 289). Austin climbed nine places on the Metro population ladder in just 10 years.

Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston were two of the three U.S. metropolitan areas that gained at least 1.2 million residents over the decade. New York City was the third.

Fort Worth was the fastest growing major city in Texas (24 percent) between 2010 and 2020, followed by Austin (21.7 percent), Houston (9.8 percent), Dallas (8.9 percent) and San Antonio (8, 1 percent).

Two of the five U.S. counties that took in at least 300,000 residents between 2010 and 2020 are in Texas – Harris County (638,686) and Tarrant County (301,606).
“Many districts within the metropolitan areas recorded growth [from 2010 to 2020], especially in the south and west. However, as we have seen in our annual population estimates, our country is growing more slowly than before, ”said Marc Perry, chief demographer at the Census Bureau, in a press release.
