Austin Police ID Officer Who Fired At Group Of Downtown Shooters

AUSTIN, TX – Austin Police identified the officer who fired his gun in a fatal downtown shootout on Saturday.
Policeman Glenn Vargas, who has served the department for four years, was identified by police late Monday. Vargas was taken on administrative leave, according to police protocol, after he fired his gun in the shooting.
At around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, officers were investigating a potentially drunk driver near 5th and Sabine Streets when they heard gunfire, police said.

The officers then ran north on Sabine Street and saw a group of men shooting at another group. Vargas shot the shooters, the police said. It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was shot by Vargas’ gun.

The men ran away when the police started the pursuit. The officers arrested a suspect and found a gun.
Less than two minutes after the shooting, police found a victim and tried to save his life. He was hospitalized in critical condition and later died of his injuries. The police identified 17-year-old Michael Carothers as the victim.
No officers were injured in the shooting, which was recorded with the officer’s body-worn camera, police said. The authorities are looking for other videos.
Investigators plan to post a video of the shooting within 10 working days of a live press conference.
