But you mustn’t sweat (at least inside), there is still time to claim the coveted “Over the City” crown. To thwart your plans, we’ve rounded up 10 of Austin’s most exciting fall openings, each so shiny and new we don’t even know the details of the menu – but we do know local foodies are already talking about them, so the ones high hopes fly. You have until the end of summer to pay off the Olive Garden and Cheesecake Factory gift cards, champion, because autumn is sure to make you a true culinary trendsetter.

The team behind Austin’s ever-popular restaurants Emma & Rye, Hestia, Kalimotxo and TLV will be opening their sixth concept in the coming season. Under the direction of Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph, who was born in Guyana, Canje is preparing to become a Caribbean restaurant with flavors from Guyana, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and other islands in the region. Pro tip: The Jerk Chicken should be a real show stealer.

Opening date: February 2022
Austin’s new Thompson Hotel is set to showcase this highly anticipated offshoot of Mashama Bailey and Johno Morisano’s groundbreaking The Gray in Savannah, Georgia. Unlike its more polished older brother, however, this southern cuisine specialist becomes a casual eatery with counter service and take-away items.

This New York original’s first full-service Austin restaurant arrives at Domain Northside this fall. They are best known for their charcoal-fired stone-oven patties and calzones, which are made using a proprietary batter recipe and techniques that are more than 100 years old. The new restaurant extends over a covered terrace with an area of 1,000 square meters and a fully equipped bar.

Opening date: August 2021
As the first licensed distillery in Texas Hill Country, this drunken gem produces handcrafted, artisanal vodka, gin, and bourbon in small batches with coveted limestone-filtered spring water. The on-site Distillers Bar opens in late August and is a perfect place to sample homemade liquid creations alongside local treats like chicken pot pie and Texas Hereford chilli with cornbread cake.

Tso has been a hit among takeaway Austinites since its launch in 2017, especially fans of General Tso’s high-quality chicken and crab crab rangoon. The tip-free delivery and pick-up restaurant already operates outposts in Cherrywood and Arboretum, with this third iteration this fall in the South Congress.

This affordable hub of Japanese cuisine is the newest addition to South Congress Avenue. The extensive menu includes bento boxes, sushi, poke bowls, ramen, salads and yakisoba. Keep an eye out for lunch and daily specials for cheap combos.
Rosen’s Bagel Company

Opening date: Autumn 2021
Austin’s celebrated bagel maker will finally have his own flagship shop this year, which is just outside the domain. The bagels from Rosen are boiled in specially calibrated water for a pronounced crust and chewing function before they are sown on both sides for optimal taste. The new location will also serve coffee and come with dining, patio seating and drive-through options.

The Aikawa brothers plan to add this tropical oasis to their powerful portfolio in September. Tiki will whisk guests away to the islands of Hawaii with refined fruity cocktails paired with Polynesian and Japanese merged shareables in the midst of a landscape that promises to be haunting.

The Houston-based healthy restaurant launched its Austin pop-up with great success last June. And this fall they are expanding their presence in the capital with a permanent restaurant on 2nd Street serving the best local ingredients in the form of sandwiches, salads and soups.

Thompson Austin will also have a fabulous new indoor-outdoor fun and frolic venue on the fourth floor courtesy of Chicago hipster siren Land and Sea Dept. Wax Myrtle promises a pool, covered cabanas, outdoor fireplace, live events and much more luxury bar with cocktails, fortified wine, sherry, American and Mexican spirits and, surprisingly, a stacked liquor-free department, all in the colors, flavors and textures of West Texas are grounded.
