Austin Schools Defy Texas Lawmaker Matt Krause’s Silly Book Crusade
[ad_1]
The Austin School District does not condone a Texas state legislature’s crusade to identify and catalog hundreds of books on health, gender, and sexuality. Rep. Matt Krause, a Republican running for attorney general, has requested that several school districts identify books that speak of “material that may cause students to feel uncomfortable … or that convey that a student is natural because of race or gender” is racist, sexist or oppressive, consciously or unconsciously ”- part of a nationwide crusade of conservatives who want to determine what teachers can teach in their classrooms. His list of 800 books included several award-winning titles on races and harmless health books such as The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine and books on sexually transmitted diseases.
A spokesman for the district announced in a statement that it had been decided “that feedback is not required, especially since anyone can search our library catalogs on this website”. Other counties that have received requests – mainly in urban areas – have stated that they are either responding to or considering the request.
