One of the best taco spots in town, Discada, is now temporarily closed indefinitely after the Central East Austin food truck was totaled in a car accident on 1319 Rosewood Avenue last week.
According to co-owner Anthony Pratto, no one was injured as the gas pipes used for cooking were turned off for the day at the time of the accident. “It’s kind of a miracle because it could have gone very wrong.”
On Friday, August 13, around 5:30 p.m., a car knocked over the city’s rubbish bin, which was bolted to the floor, and then hit the Discada vehicle so hard that the food truck spun around. At the time, one employee, John Page, was working in the truck, and co-owner Xose Velasco was serving food to a group of guests in the outdoor dining area. When the car crashed into the food truck, Page had to “evade”[e] Knife, fat and boiling water, ”Pratto said,“ but it came out well. ”He was able to climb out of the window of the truck because the door would not open. “That was very scary for him.”
Outside, after the car hit the truck, the car continued straight towards Velasco, who “literally jumped Spider-Man” and landed on the hood of the car, which was stopped by one of the concrete-filled barrels that doubles Planter and foundation for the covered awning of the food truck. The impact still moved the entire awning structure by half a foot.

Someone in the group who dine at the truck posted their experience on Reddit.
The driver reported feeling dizzy as he drove east on Rosewood Avenue, Pratto said. The driver told the second person in the car, a friend, that he was not feeling well and asked if they could stop driving. Then he passed out while the car was “probably 50″ [miles per hour]”, Says Pratto,” and it turned completely on the curb. “After the accident and the driver waking up, he got out of the car, but then passed out again at the tables.
As a result of the crash, the Discada truck was “dead”, says Pratto. The truck’s petrol tanks and gas lines were ripped open and the new air conditioning system ruined. The car wreck destroyed some of the truck’s cooling systems, the hood vent was messed up, and the two axles were broken so they couldn’t even move the truck.
With the Discada team still waiting for the insurance expert to come out and inspect the scene of the accident (Pratto filed the damage on Saturday and it was said it would take about two business days), they cannot start repairs or even remove rotting food from the premises. He noted that their specially welded burners and discs – which were used to cook the truck’s special diskada tacos – were safe. A police report was also made and no one was arrested.
Nixta Taqueria co-owners, Edgar Rico and Sara Mardanbigi, who are good friends of the Discada team, started a GoFundMe campaign to help them with future truck repair costs, lost products and the team’s salaries. You have already achieved and exceeded the goal. “We were overwhelmed by the support,” says Pratto, “so we definitely feel the love. There’s just a lot, but I think all in all it will work out. I have faith in the community. “
Discada co-owners Pratto, Velasco and Sean Donahue opened the truck in 2018 and focused on the eponymous north Mexican taco preparation, in which layers of beef, pork and vegetables are cooked in the juices of the previous layer in a specially built plow, in the Essentially a round, deep cooking pan.
