The city of Austin is making progress in the first planning phase for the expansion of the Asian American Resource Center in northeastern Austin.
The AARC, along with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department and Austin Public Works, announced on July 6th that Trahan Architects had been selected to plan the upcoming expansion of the AARC facilities.
The upcoming expansion of the AARC includes plans to build a new theater with 200 to 400 seats on the site at 8401 Cameron Road, Austin. According to the AARC website, the expansion also includes provisions for related location improvements and parking facilities.
Trahan will take over the planning phase of the planned expansion. According to a timeline on the AARC website, the design is expected to take about two years, with construction expected to start in the fall of 2023. The AARC expects to open the completed extension in the spring of 2025.
The architectural firm has offices in New York, New Orleans and Atlanta. According to the company’s portfolio, Trahan Architects designed the new arrivals garden and Moody pavilions at Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park in Laguna Gloria in West Austin.
Trahan’s portfolio also includes performance art spaces and event centers across the country with design credits to the Laredo Convention Center in Texas, the Aurora Event Center in New York, and the Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theater in Georgia.
The achievement center addition at AARC is funded by $ 7 million bond funds through Proposal B of the 2018 voter-approved bond.
In its July 6th newsletter, the city announced that it was planning an upcoming community engagement to inform design and functional elements through public feedback. Information on opportunities for community engagement is disseminated via the AARC newsletter. Interested residents can register for this newsletter Here.
