Austin’s Barton Springs Pool will end reservation system in July

Think back to that dark day in May when Austinites found out they’d need a reservation to swim in the Barton Springs Pool.
The policy of requiring a two-hour reservation window prior to each visit to the city’s water crown jewel was put in place to help the pool “manage capacity for the safety of staff and guests,” according to the city’s website on December 12th received with dismay by many on social media. A sample comment from an Austin360 Instagram follower: “Whoever came up with this idea, I hope you hit the hardest edge of your bed with your foot tomorrow morning.”
Well there won’t be any more reservations if you just wait a couple of weeks.

The city’s Aquatics Division announced Thursday that it was “planning to cease Barton Springs Pool reservations and accept personal sales by the end of June,” according to a press release. Additionally, the pool will have expanded reservations for the remainder of this month.
The city attributed the end of the reservation system to an increase in the recruitment and training of lifeguards. Many Austin public pools remain closed due to a shortage of lifeguards caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Starting Friday, the Barton Springs Pool (2131 William Barton Dr.) is open for swimming daily from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. at your own risk, without admission or reservation. Guarded swimming times are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Reservations during these times are required by June.
The news of the reservations came when the city announced Thursday that Barton Springs Pool would reopen after closings due to flooding last week.
