Austin’s famed Uchi rolls out new Japanese speakeasy concept downtown

Award-winning local chef and sushi expert Tyson Cole is back, drawing Austin’s attention with the announcement of a new downtown “hideaway” bar and restaurant that will focus on Japanese whiskeys, snacks and shared dishes.
Uchibā, Hai Hospitality’s “Uchi Bar” concept, which first opened in 2018 on the upper floor of the Uchi Dallas restaurant, will open its second location at 601 W. Second St. in Block 185, the iconic new building known as Google Tower became known. Uchibā is slated to open in downtown Austin in the fall of 2022.
Uchibā offers the feeling of an intimate hideaway downtown, much like izakayas, informal bars scattered across Japan. and dishes to share.
The new bar in the city center is sure to be a hotspot for late night sippers and snackers who yearn for Ushi-like delicacies, especially since it is open Sunday to Thursday until 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until midnight – an hour later than its sister concepts Uchi , Uchiko and Loro.
Although Hai Hospitality – which has restaurant concepts in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Denver, and Miami – is silent about a specific opening date, restaurant team, and menu details for the time being, the Austin-based restaurant group has put into a release that local architecture firm Sanders Architecture and the in New York-based interior design company Sarita Posada, in partnership with Hai Design Studio, to curate Uchibā’s Japanese speakeasy-influenced style.
“We designed Uchibā to feel like a sanctuary,” says Cole, founding chef and partner. “We took Japanese izakayas as inspiration. You can see the core of Uchi everywhere. We just tickled out certain elements and reinforced them to allow for a more intimate experience. “
