Buffalo Bills reportedly eyeing move to Austin, TX

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly considering moving to Austin, TX if they can’t secure a new Buffalo home venue.
On Sunday, Terry and Kim Pegula, owners of the Buffalo Bills, announced that they would apply for full taxpayer funding for a new stadium for the Bills. Talks between the Pegulas and New York State took a turn when the owners – shortly after submitting their taxpayer-centric proposal – announced that the team would consider moving to Austin if their offer is not accepted.

ESPN’s Seth Wickersham tweeted, “A property source tells me Austin is a potential target – or threat – as one of the ‘other cities elsewhere that would want and pay well for an NFL franchise.'”
Other metropolitan areas – including Orlando, Sacramento, Portland – are also interested in buying an NFL franchise, making an exodus from Buffalo possible, even if the news sounds like a bland ultimatum. Pressure is falling on New York State to find a comprehensive approach to financing to meet owners’ requests for an upgrade.
Plans have been proposed to relocate the team from Highmark Stadium, the current home of the Bills, either by building a new stadium in the same location or by moving to a neighboring venue within the state.

The current contract between the Bills and Highmark Stadium is set to expire in 2023. So if the Pegulas can’t agree on a new stadium in Buffalo, the Highmark, which opened in 1973, could settle down in just two short years.
