Bunkhouse Group continues Austin expansion with Carpenter Hotel

The Bunkhouse Group, a hospitality company that made a name for itself on Austin’s South Congress Avenue, is expanding its brand to operate another hotel in the Texas capital.

The Austin-based bunkhouse will manage the Carpenter Hotel, one of the city’s newest hotels, and the hotel’s Carpenters Hall restaurant. The hotel and restaurant are located on Josephine Street, South Lamar Boulevard and Barton Springs Road.

“Carpenter Hotel is a perfect addition to the growing bunkhouse portfolio in Texas,” said Amar Lalvani, CEO of Standard Hotels and the Bunkhouse Group, in a written statement to the American Statesman. “The property is already so popular and we’re looking forward to layering in the bunkhouse culture,” including live music and art, Lalvani said.

Standard International, the operator of Standard Hotels, acquired a majority stake in Bunkhouse in 2015. Bunkhouse was founded in 2006 by the well-known Austin hotelier Liz Lambert, but will no longer remain the Chief Creative Officer from autumn 2019.

The Carpenter development is tucked away in an old pecan grove in South Austin’s popular Zilker neighborhood. The property is close to some of the city’s most popular spots including Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool, Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, and Barton Creek Greenbelt.

Bunkhouse’s new management deal is the fifth hotel the brand operates in Austin and the first outside of the South Congress area.

Bunkhouse transformed the San José Motor Court Hotel on the South Congress directly across from the landmark Continental Club into a trendy property with high room rates that continues to attract locals and tourists.

In addition to Austin, Bunkhouse manages hotels in Marfa, San Antonio, San Francisco and Mexico.

Upon taking over management of Carpenter, Bunkhouse said it plans to have design updates across the property.

Bunkhouse plans to renovate the hotel’s rooms, pool area, lobby and restaurant. A new cultural program, retail offerings and a swimming club are also planned.

The development is located on the former site of Carpenters Local 1266 Union Hall, which was built in 1949.

The Carpenter Hotel has 93 guest rooms in a mid-century Carpenters Association building, a tree-shaded courtyard and pool, an event pavilion, and an on-site restaurant and café.

Carpenter Hotel will be the ninth operational hotel in the Bunkhouse portfolio and the seventh in Texas.

In addition to the Hotel San José, Bunkhouse runs the Hotel Saint Cecilia; the Austin Motel; Jos coffee; and most recently the new restaurants Hotel Magdalena and Summer House on Music Lane in Austin.

Other properties are the Hotel Havana and Ocho in San Antonio, the El Cosmico in Marfa, the Hotel San Cristóbal and Benno in Todos Santos, Mexico and the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco.

In 2016, Bunkhouse took over operations at the Austin Motel at 1220 S. Congress Ave.

Austin Motel, a fixture in the South Congress since the 1930s and long-owned by the Dean family, had just been bought by Greenfield Partners, a Connecticut-based investment management firm.

In a statement at the time, Lambert said she plans to “keep the iconic identity, character and spirit of the Austin Motel intact.”
