Central Texas Food Bank expands grocery home delivery program

Central Texas Food Bank has expanded its home delivery program to include those with disabilities, veterans, and active service members who have barriers to participating in personal food distributions.

The program, run in partnership with the Austin Public Health Neighborhood Services Unit and Amazon, began on June 1 of this year with the monthly delivery of a box of healthy, long-life food to families with children and adults over 60 in Travis County.

All groceries are free, according to CTFB, and Amazon is donating free delivery services through its network of Amazon delivery service partners that deliver secure, contactless deliveries direct to attendees’ homes. Austin Public Health offers case management, screening, and registration.

According to the CTFB, the aim of the program is to help more people in need by improving access to food aid for underserved households. After signing up, attendees will receive a recurring monthly grocery box containing approximately 30 pounds of groceries such as oatmeal, pasta, cornmeal, dried beans, canned protein, and canned fruits and vegetables.

The service delivers a box with enough food for 25 meals. To date, the program has delivered more than 23,000 meals.

The program recently added a second delivery day every week and currently delivers every first, second, third, and fourth Tuesday and Wednesday of every month. Participants can unsubscribe from the program at any time.

For those in need of food aid who do not qualify for this program, the Food Bank has a proxy policy that allows customers to send someone to collect food directly from the pantry on their behalf.
