The City of Austin’s Urban Trails Program has begun planning an urban trail that would run through the Bergstrom Spur Corridor, according to a December 1 press release.
The trail extends approximately 6.5 miles from Vinson Drive in South Austin to East Riverside Drive and US 183 in southeast Austin, near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The project was identified in 2017 by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and in the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan 2019 as an important link along the city’s pedestrian, bicycle and transit networks.
“Planning projects like the Bergstrom Spur Corridor study help turn aspirations into reality,” said Ann Kitchen, city council member and vice chair of the CAMPO Transportation Policy Board, in a press release. “When you consider both the short-term and long-term opportunities for this corridor, this project stands out for its potential to provide the transportation options you need in a fast-growing city.”
The city, along with CAMPO, won the Planning Achievement Award for Transportation Planning from the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association for a study published on the corridor in December 2020.
The project will be carried out in three stages and the city is working on designs for all three at the same time. The costs are to be determined.
