Cloudflare Announces R2 Storage; Rapid and Reliable S3-Compatible Object Storage Designed for the Edge
[ad_1]
SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the security, performance, and reliability company that helps build a better Internet, today announced Cloudflare R2 Storage, a better way for developers to store everything they need , with automatic data migration from S3-compatible services for easy switching. Cloudflare R2 storage, designed for the edge, offers the ability to store large amounts of data, which is possible with Cloudflare, while lowering the outbound bandwidth charges associated with the cloud provider’s storage to zero.
To build websites and applications, developers need a place to store photos, videos, and graphics that is quick and easy to access. When cloud storage first emerged it was a huge step forward in making this fast, flexible, and scalable storage available to developers. However, the increasingly outrageous bandwidth prices have created costly headaches for some developers, resulting in vendor retention. Cloudflare’s mission is to help build a better internet, which means the company is focused on making the internet faster, safer and more affordable for everyone.
“Since AWS launched S3, cloud storage has attracted and then locked in developers with exorbitant egress charges,” said Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “We want developers to keep evolving and not worry about their storage bills. Our goal is to make R2 Storage the most affordable and reliable option for storing data with no outbound fees. I’m always amazed at what developers are building on our platform, and I look forward to more innovations as we expand the tools they have access to. ”
In 2018, Cloudflare took the first step to address the formidable outbound charges by creating the Bandwidth Alliance, a group of forward-thinking cloud and network companies committed to reducing or waiving data transfer charges for shared customers. Cloudflare R2 Storage will take this commitment even further by adding automatic migration of data from S3-compatible services and providing developers with high-performance object storage – minus egress charges.
Cloudflare’s R2 storage enables developers to:
-
Lower the bills for outbound cloud providers and storage: The goal of Cloudflare is to make R2 Storage the most affordable option for high-performance object storage, regardless of size. Because of this, Cloudflare plans to eliminate egress charges, provide object storage that is at least 10% cheaper than S3, and make infrequent access completely free for customers.
-
Take advantage of the performance of object storage created with Cloudflare’s Edge Network: Leveraging Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects, R2 provides low-latency, high-throughput storage for the most demanding applications.
-
Automatically migrate data from third-party providers to Cloudflare: Cloudflare R2 Storage includes automatic migration from other S3-compatible cloud storage services that migrate data from providers as needed, making saving outbound bandwidth bills as easy as setting a destination bucket.
-
Store application data wherever you need it in the world: R2 replicates data across regions and supports legal restrictions so organizations can control where their data is stored to meet their local and global needs.
-
Use the power and scalability of Cloudflare Workers in your applications: R2 Storage is fully integrated into the Cloudflare Workers runtime, which makes creating data pipelines and manipulating objects incredibly easy.
