With both sides already through to the next round after their two wins in the opening rounds the result of this third round game will just determine who tops the group. There will then be two semi finals (Winner Group 1.v 2nd placed Group 2; Winner Group 2 .v. 2nd placed Group 1) and a Club Championship Final on a date to be finalised.

Minor Football

Austin Stacks 0-5; St. Kierans 5-15:

It was just one of those days when nothing will go right for you. Everyone knows that our boys are class footballers as they have shown in their recent performances during the County and Central Leagues and that this first round of this season’s Co. Championship, played in a murky Connolly Park on last Saturday afternoon (18th Sept), was just an off-day. Having said that, one has to admit that Kierans gave a top class display on the day.

We failed to score during the first half while the opposition chalked up 3-10. They had increased that lead to 4-15 before Damien Hogan opened our scoring from a free just before the second water break. We added a further four points during the final quarter a pointed free from Paddy Lane and three from play by Noah Townsend, Thomas Derege and Caden O’Mahony before Kierans got the final score of the game a fifth goal in the 60th minute.

We now travel to Lewis Road on next Saturday afternoon (25th Sept) to play the home side Dr. Crokes in round 2 of this three round opener.

Club Mission Statement

Congratulations to Eamonn O’Reilly and his colleagues on the Sub-Committee (Gene O’Donnell, John O’Keeffe, Mike Casey and Paudie McQuinn) for a very comprehensive Mission/Vision Statement and Club Values which they recently produced and which was formally endorsed by the Club Committee at its recent September Executive Meeting.

September in the past

On the field of play we go back to 1931 to the 20th Sept. that year, the day that Kerry won their first All Ireland Minor Championship, defeating Louth by 3-4 to 0-4.. There were four Rock players on that team Brendan Reidy, Frank O’Neill, Jimmy Gawksie Gorman and Tim O’Sullivan.

Also on the field of play (21st Sept 1969) we won our first ever Co. MF Championship title defeating Kenmare District by 3-12 to 2-5. Team: Joe Parker, John Crean, John Joe Naughton, Brendan Mangan, Ger O’Keeffe, Noel Kelter, Eddie O’Connor, John O’Keeffe (Capt), Pat Dowling, Michael Sugrue, Ger Power, Tommy Kennington, Terry McSweeney, Ciarán Sugrue, Fergus Dillon. Rest of Panel: TimmyClifford, Niall Murphy, Tony O’Keeffe, Ger MacNamara, George Dineen, Pat McElligott, Rory McSweeney.

Three outstanding Club members passed away during the third week in September. In 1968 (17th Sept) Dolly Mulchinock died tragically in Lourdes following a traffic accident. Then in 1988 (20th Sept) Moss O’Carroll, one of the great Team Mentors of both mens and ladies football passed away and in 2014 (17th Sept) John Lynch a Club Vice President and a former player and member of the Club Executive died.

Cards

It has been so long since we had Cards in our Clubhouse (Thurs 12th March 2020 was the last night) that we had to go to the dictionary to check the spelling of the word. But with restrictions (including social distancing) being eased as and from 22nd October we are coming back on the first available night – the October Bank Holiday Monday (25th October) provided, of course, that there will be no further mishaps in the meantime. Looking forward to seeing all our old friends again and any newcomers who would also be most welcome for our usual 9.30pm start on Mondays and Thursday nights.

Club Lotto

Monday Night’s (20th Sept) Jackpot, worth €2,850, was not won. The numbers drawn were 1, 3, 24, 32. AUSTIN STACKS LADIES

Girls Academy

Our U8s and U10 girls enjoyed a great morning of football V John Mitchels in Connolly Park last Sunday. Thanks to John Mitchels for visiting. This Sunday we will have training for our U6, 8s and 10s in Caherlsee. On Sun Oct 3rd we will welcome Churchill to Connolly Park and Sun Oct 10th will be our final training day of the season and will include a medal presentation.

U12 Co. League Div 2 Plate Final

Austin Stacks 5-10 to Firies 1-06. Excellent hard work throughout paid dividends for our girls last Thursday evening, when things clicked well for them from the beginning. Both teams had the minimum of players in a 13 aside match, with captain, Juli Griffin starring in goals and full back line of Keira Boyle, Chloe McMahon and Aine Gibbons very solid all night. Emma and Claire Counihan were brilliant at half back while our tireless midfield of Eimear Dillane and Kara Kirby worked very well together to keep the forward fed with good ball all night. Penny Costello and Aoibhinn Hennessy were outstanding in the half forward line both chipping in their fair share of points! Most of our points came from play. The full forward line of Dibora Foley, Amelie O’Sullivan and Ellen Lucey were excellent throughout and missed more goals than they scored! The work rate was phenomenal especially when we lost possession of the ball. Two more games left in the town league V Na Gaeil and Kerins O’Rahillys.

U12 Cubs

We commenced our Town League campaign with an impressive display against St Pats in Connolly Park last Thursday evening.

The girls played with great determination and were rewarded with a well-deserved victory on a score line of 3-6 to 0-5. Next up for the team is an away game V John Mitchels at 6pm this Wednesday.

U13 Co. Championship

We had a fantastic win last Monday night in the U13’s Championship against Rathmore. Final score AS 4-06 Rathmore 0-8. Trailing by 4 points at the 1st water break, the girls rallied to net two goals in the 2nd quarter to kick start the scoring. A tough game, missing a few regulars, the girls did brilliantly to pull away in the end for a comfortable win, based on a hard-work ethic throughout. Captain Fantastic for the night, Aisling Browne even saved a penalty!! All we can say is well done and keep it up. The semifinal V Kerins O’Rahilly’s goes ahead this Tuesday Sept 21st at 6pm in Connolly Park.

U14

Just 3 teams in this year’s North Kerry League Div 1 — Austin Stacks, Abbeydorney and Castleisland. There will be 1 outright winner and a Shield final. Competition presently on hold pending U13 Co. Championship games/results.

U15 Club Championship

Our depleted squad put in a massive performance to advance to the Semi Final of this year’s U15 Co. Championship last Saturday afternoon in Milltown when we defeated the divisional side MKL Gaels (Milltown/Keel/Listry) FT Austin Stacks 10-14 MKL 5-8. We will be away to Beaufort in the Semi-final this Saturday at 4pm.

U16 Girls

North Kerry League Div 1 – We have a packed itinerary of games to get through. Upcoming Fixtures as follows: away V Castleisland Mon Sept 20th, home V Abbeydorney at 6pm on Thurs Sept 23rd, Home V Corcha Dhuibhne/Castlegregory on Mon Sept 27th, and home V Ballymac on Tues Oct 5th.

U17 Club Championship

We were defeated by Ballymac in the Quarter Final last Wednesday evening FT Austin Stacks 1-10 Ballymac 3-11. And so ended a fantastic season for our U17/Minor Ladies under the management team of Gene O’Donnell, Kieran Kelliher, Xavier Murray and Pat Reidy. A season in which we captured the Minor Co. League Div 2 Title. A first Co. title at minor level for Austin Stacks Ladies Club! and we saw 5 of our girls win the Munster Minor B Championship playing with Kerry – Lara Flynn, Clodagh Murray, Chloe Fitzpatrick, Eimear O’Sullivan and Kerry Oba.

Senior Ladies

Corca Dhuibhne 6-17 Austin Stacks 6-9: (report by Gene O’Donnell) This second round Randle Brothers Intermediate championship served up some impressive fare under the gaze of Kerry Senior Joint Manager, Declan Quill and a sizeable audience. It seems that there is a market for this format as there was a large cohort of neutrals in attendance as well as watching scouts from rival camps! A large gathering enjoyed a fascinating encounter with the highlight being a masterclass by Louise Ní Mhuireartaigh under lights at Connolly Park. This was despite an excellent display by Austin Stacks defence, especially full backs Niamh Loughnane and Norma O’Connor and Lara Flynn who did not put a foot wrong all night.

Corca Dhuibhne got off to a great start with Louise Ní Ni Mhuireartaigh, Cait Ní Luing and Siobhan Ní Chuanaigh, racking up points at will from some superb kickpassing, well timed support runs and quality score taking. This was not to say Austin Stacks were not playing well, because they were. It was just that the likes of Louise Ní Ni Mhuireartaigh and her supporting cast were so adept at creating space and using well-honed passes that they were able to finish their moves.

The first quarter ended and a point from Louise N Ní i Mhuireartaigh which was followed by goal from Siobhan Ní Chuanaigh made things look ominous. A good save from a Megan O’Brien penalty looked like the nail on the coffin for the black and amber girls but almost immediately Megan showed fantastic character to force a turnover from a Corca Dhuibhne kickout and finish to the net for a much-needed Stacks goal. At half time, the score stood at Corca Dhuibhne 2-12 to Austin Stacks 1-5 and Louise Ní Mhuireartaigh did not reappear for the second half. But a new resurgent Stacks outfit did, scoring 3-4 in a blistering 3rd quarter, what American sport pundits have christened the moving quarter. And wow, did Stacks move and move well. Goals by Megan O’Brien, Mollie O’Carroll and Caoimhe Barry Walsh were interspersed by points form Caoimhe Barry Walsh(3) and the livewire Mollie O’Carroll.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes, there were lots of rumblings amongst the reawakened by standers. Yes, in Peter Canavan style, Louise Ni Mhuirchaertaigh was being introduced to the fray. 3 points by the same player either side of goals by Lisa Ní Gearailt and Cáit Ní Luing meant that, despite a last minute consolation goal by Mollie O’Carroll, it meant that it gave the West Kerry outfit the spoils and at the end deservedly so. So it is two wins out of two for the Corca Dhuibhne squad and they will take solace form the fact that despite a poor 3rd quarter they still ran out winners. From the home team’s perspective,

The Rock players can hold their heads up high after a stirring display where Norma O’Connor, Niamh Loughnane, Lara Flynn, Róise O’Donnell, Eimear O’Sullivan and Sarah Hoare battled bravely for the hour.

Aoife Dillane formed a great partnership with the returning Emma McCarthy and up front the hard-working Katie Killeen, Breda Slattery, Caoimhe Barry Walsh showed great link play and provided some great ball into the inside forwards, where Mollie O’Carroll was a constant threat and Marina Barry Walsh and Linda Raymond alternated the role of pointguard directing the play with great precision and authority. For manager, John Walsh another encouraging step in the right direction, lessons learnt, take the positives and as always beidh lá eile.

Laoch na h-imeartha: Louise Ní Mhuireartaigh. Austin Stacks: Chloe Fitzpatrick, Niamh Loughnane, Lara Flynn, Norma O’Connor (Karena Slattery), Róise O’Donnell, Eimear O’Sullivan, Sarah Hoare, Aoife Dillane, Emma McCarthy, Megan O’Brien, Caoimhe Barry Walsh, Katie Killeen, Marian Barry Walsh, Linda Raymond, Marina Barry Walsh. Rd 3 is away to Scartaglin this Sunday Sept 26th
