Coronavirus in Austin, Texas: Hospital admissions reach Stage 3

Austin has officially fallen below 30 hospital admissions a day.

AUSTIN, Texas – Days after Austin Public Health moved Austin-Travis County to Level 4 of its risk-based guidelines for COVID-19, the Austin area officially entered the Level 3 hospitalization area.

On September 30, the seven-day average for hospital admissions was 29.7 per day, according to the Austin COVID-19 dashboard. The Level 3 threshold when it comes to the hospital admission metric is a 7-day moving average of 15-29 admissions.

However, hospital admissions aren’t the only metric health officials consider when determining what stage the city should be operating at. Officials monitor several key indicators, including the 7-day moving average of new hospital admissions, positivity rate, and current ICU and ventilation patients.

In the past, when the region’s COVID-19 metrics hit a new threshold, officials monitor the statistics for several days before moving Austin-Travis County into a new phase.

At level 4, fully vaccinated individuals should wear a mask when attending indoor gatherings, traveling, eating, or shopping, and wearing a mask for outdoor gatherings if they cannot distance themselves socially. Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated individuals should avoid gatherings, travel, dining, and shopping unless strictly necessary, and wear a mask when performing essential activities.

Under level 3, vaccinated persons are asked to wear a mask except for outdoor gatherings, as well as when eating and shopping, while unvaccinated persons must wear a mask at all times.
