A nonprofit dedicated to supporting culinary innovation in Dallas makes grants. According to a press release, the Dallas Food & Wine Alliance will award $ 16,000 to eligible candidates including farmers, chefs, artisans, wine / beer / liquor makers, culinary nonprofits, corporations, and food and beverage professionals whose projects innovate and impact show to the community.

The Dallas Chapter was founded in 2020 – as part of an expansion of the original Austin Food & Wine Alliance, known for events like Wine & Swine. The organization evolved into a statewide entity called the Texas Food & Wine Alliance, with offices in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

In addition to the Dallas Scholarship, an additional $ 60,000 will be awarded in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston.

The press release states that the scholarship program is the first in the US to provide funding to support culinary innovations that also give back to the local community.

Cathy Cochran-Lewis, Grant Chair and Alliance President, said in a statement that they are thrilled to continue the Grant program despite the setbacks caused by the pandemic.

“It was only through great partnerships and the generous and supportive culture in Dallas and North Texas that we were able to raise the funds for scholarships this year,” says Cochran-Lewis. “This money will continue to flow into the community through unique and innovative projects.”

Since 2012, Alliance Grants have been used to support projects such as

Texas’ first organic apple orchard, Argus Cidery

Texas’ first locally grown and malted barley to support craft beer production, Blacklands Malt

A volunteer program that teaches agricultural skills to diverse population groups and culinary students, New Farm Institute at Green Gate Farms

Austin’s first community-sponsored bakery, Miche Bread

The TFWA Board of Directors determines the amount of grant funding based on fundraising efforts. Each city has a jury made up of a private jury of prominent chefs and community members who decide who will receive the scholarships.

This year’s Dallas consists of three scholarships:

  • Dallas Bourbon Club Grant of US $ 8,500 awarded to a company or nonprofit in the food, wine, or spirits industries

  • Tito’s Handmade Vodka Entrepreneur Grant of $ 5,000, given to an entrepreneur who has pursued his business dream despite setbacks, similar to the saga of founder Tito Beveridge

  • The $ 2,500 Truffle Masters Grant for Community Heroes is awarded to a chef who has mastered diversity and challenges to serve others

Particular attention will be paid to initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion within the Dallas community.
