South Llano River State Park just outside Junction is a recreational area for all seasons. With two miles of access to the headwaters, it’s especially refreshing in the summer months.

The river meanders through the park, alternating between shallow rapids and deep pools. Bring a hose as this is a great place for a lazy floating trip within the park boundaries.

The more adventurous will want to take a kayak tour that starts upstream from the park near the Telegraph ghost town and continues to the city park in Junction. Before launching your watercraft, check with the state park staff about the condition of the river, especially after the recent rainfall. There are outfitters in Junction who can provide equipment and shuttle services. Keep in mind that most of the riverbanks outside of the state park are jealously guarded private property.

If fishing is your recreation, you’ve come to the right place. This section of the river is known for trout and Guadalupe basins. You don’t need a fishing license to drop a hook in the park.

With more than 35 km of hiking and biking trails, you can easily find the right hike for you. One trail not to be missed is the 1.2 mile hike to the lookout point behind the campsite. From the top of the hill you have a panoramic view of the river valley.

The South Llano River State Park is celebrating its 31st anniversary this year. Just south of Junction, about 245 miles west of Austin, it remains one of the state’s most popular parks. Reservations are a must and can be requested at 512 / 389-8900 or tpwd.texas.gov.
