The Dell Foundation announced Tuesday that the $ 38 million would be split between three organizations: $ 36.6 million to Mobile Loaves & Fishes, $ 1 million to Foundation Communities, and $ 400,000 to LifeWorks.
The Mobile Loaves & Fishes portion will be used for the third and fourth phases of Community First! Village program priced at $ 150 million. The program hosts people who have experienced homelessness in a community of microhouses, prefabricated houses and mobile homes.
“As Austin grows, caring for the most vulnerable in our communities is more important than ever,” said Susan Dell, co-founder and chairman of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. “By coming together as a community, we can give the homeless in central Texas the dignity they deserve through stable housing and the opportunity to experience community again. We are honored to partner with Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Foundation Communities, and LifeWorks – along with the wider Central Texas community through our Community Match – to accelerate the difference these organizations are making on the ground every day. “
Nearly 1,400 homes will be added in the two phases, half of which in phase three on 51 acres alongside the existing 51 acres of 500 homes on Hog Eye Road in northeast Austin. The other half will be used for Phase Four, which is an area of 76 acres on Burleson Road between US 183 and McKinney Falls Parkway in southeast Austin.
“What happens through Community First! Village reflects the real goodness of our great city, ”said Alan Graham, Founder and CEO of Mobile Loaves & Fishes. “Our vision is for Austin to truly become a community empowered to lead a lifestyle of service with our neighbors who have experienced homelessness. We are deeply grateful for this exceedingly generous gift from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and the unifying effect it will inspire in the wider community as we continue to serve our friends who need it most. ”
The $ 1 million Foundation Communities will build 100 residential units on the Community First site! The fourth phase of the village on Burleson Road.
LifeWorks’ $ 400,000 will be used to provide permanent housing for teenagers affected by homelessness.
“The foundation remains committed to its core mission of creating opportunities for children and families living in urban poverty through education, health and economic stability for families,” said Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies and co-founder of Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. “We believe everyone deserves a chance. But finding the way to a stronger future without a safe place to live is not easy. With stable living space and a supportive community, people can create a better future. “
Building the next phases of Community First! The village is slated to begin in 2022, officials said.
