Despite Southwest cancellations, local airports don’t expect issues here

Officials at Appleton and Green Bay Airports say they do not expect non-weather-related flight cancellations or delays during what is expected to be a busy vacation travel season.

Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport stayed busy Tuesday as people traveled to places like Chicago and even Munich.

Marty Piette, director of Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, said more travel numbers are expected this year than in 2020 as the airport recovers from the pandemic.

“Most of the recreation we’ve seen is leisure travel. So it’s people visiting friends and family,” said Piette. “These are usually the ones who travel during Thanksgiving and Christmas. So I think it’s going to be another very busy Christmas season.”

Southwest Airlines canceled thousands of flights nationwide over Labor Day weekend. Southwest does not have interline arrangements that require major airlines such as Delta and American travelers to book with other participating airlines.

Southwest Airlines is not an airline with Austin Straubel. Piette said several of the airport’s airlines are involved in the interline arrangements and do not have the same problems on the ground as Southwest.

“The southwest problem doesn’t really concern us here, but understand that it could affect you at the nearest airport you arrive through,” said Piette.

He said it was important for people to plan this vacation travel time in advance: sign up for airlines, check flight schedules, and arrive on time to catch the flight.

Austin Straubel will add a flight to Tampa through Frontier Airlines on December 16 and another one through Sun Country Airlines to Fort Myers and Phoenix from December 16.
