AUSTIN, Texas – While the state is still waiting for a prominent Democrat to announce the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott’s GOP main challengers are trying to make it a race by giving them some attention.
The loudest one is Don Huffines, who said he pushed Abbott to the right. Governor Abbott banned private companies from using COVID vaccines after being chased by Huffines. The governor announced in the spring that the state would build its own border wall, which also came after Huffine’s proposal.
The list goes on.
“I think it’s pretty obvious that we have a huge impact on Texas politics,” Huffines said in an interview with Capital Tonight. “My campaign is about leadership, not excuses. Right now we have failed leadership in the state of Texas. “
Abbott mostly publicly ignored his challengers, and his campaign said Huffines had nothing to do with the decisions Abbott makes. When asked to respond to Huffines’ comments, Abbott’s chief strategist Dave Carney replied simply, “Who?”
Huffines is a wealthy business owner and former senator. While he faces an uphill battle to defeat Abbott, he has also excelled for his ability to self-finance. Abbott has more than $ 55 million in cash.
“We’ll have the resources to compete. We have already raised more money with my money and the money I raised than any other Republican challenger has ever raised, ”said Huffines.
On the issue of border security, Huffines went further when Abbott vowed to deploy the entire Texan National Guard to the border and to suspend all commercial inbound traffic with Mexico until that country secures its side of the border. Huffines compared this strategy to treating cancer when asked about the devastating impact that the Texan economy could have.
“It will be painful, there will be no argument. But I like to say that if you want to cure cancer, chemotherapy is also painful. “
Huffines is one of at least three main challengers trying to drop Abbott. Former Texas GOP chairman Allen West and Conservative commentator Chad Prather are also running.
