Downtown Austin Restaurant J. Carver Oyster Bar and Chophouse Opening in Summer

Upcoming attraction, downtown part 1
The Italian restaurant Red Ash in the city center is opening a new restaurant in the premises that used to be part of the popular Holy Roller diner. J. Carver Oyster Bar and Chophouse will be located at 509 Rio Grande Street, Suite 100, starting this summer. The menu includes wood-grilled steaks and daily oysters, according to the poached list. The name comes from Red Ash chef and owner John Carver, who previously held the same kitchen role at Eddie V’s chain restaurant. Holy Roller, owned by Callie Speer, closed in October 2020.

Anniversary promotion for kittens
Austin Vivian’s Boulangerie Bakery Service is celebrating its first birthday with a themed kitten ride for Austin Pets Alive’s bottle nursery. The owner and baker Kendall Melton is asking for a selection of items, ranging from heating pads to towels to found objects, in the Amazon registry. Returns are from Friday, July 9th to Sunday, July 11th at 3708 Promontory Point Drive. There will also be free cookies and other likely edible goodies.

Extension opening alarm
Phoebe’s Diner in South Austin opened a second location in downtown Austin in late June. The new diner is located at 408 West 11th Street, Unit 100 and takes over Darna Mediterranean Cuisine, which appears to have closed sometime last fall. Chef Camden Stuerzenberger’s menu remains the same – a range of American-Texan dishes from migas to roasted chicken with grits to pancakes and smoked meat. Opening times are from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open for food to eat and take away. Owners Robert Tran, Eric Tran and Quang Chau also run the Winebelly tapas restaurant in South Austin.

Stolen restaurant artwork
An outdoor work of art was stolen from the Mexican restaurant Fonda San Miguel this week. It happened sometime overnight until the early morning of Tuesday, July 6th. The fountain sculpture was created by Mexican artist Sergio Bustamente, whose other works are on display throughout the restaurant. The restaurant is offering a $ 500 reward for returning the artwork, as reported by CBS Austin.

Upcoming attraction, downtown part 2
Austin-based mini-chain Royal Blue Grocery is opening a second location on Rainey Street, Towers reports. It is located at 91 Red River Street, street level with the upcoming Quincy mixed-use building, less than half a mile from its current location at 51 Rainey Street.

San Antonio Antonio Taco Competition
The San Antonio Food & Wine Alliance is hosting a taco competition next week. 19 restaurants from San Antonio and Austin will participate in the taco rumble, including Asador (grilled mushroom taco paired with a mole amarillo), Carnitas Lonja (a Michoacán-style carnitas taco), Lala’s Gorditas (puffy taco norteño), and Austins Taco Mafria by Cuantos Tacos, Discada and Nixta (a Campechana taco with rock steak and longaniza confit). It will take place on Thursday, July 15, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Espee at 1174 East Commerce Street. General admission tickets are $ 65 and VIP tickets are $ 150.

Juice Bar Upcoming Attraction
Another out of town juice bar company is coming to Austin. This time it’s Raw Republic Juice from New Orleans. The location in Texas will, as Tribeza reports, be found at 724 North Lamar Boulevard in Clarksville from mid-July.

Food price
Dripping Springs’ food company Art of Pecan was named the only oil winner at the Good Food Awards in Texas that year.

Upcoming attraction, downtown part 3
National chain Chick-fil-A is opening a downtown location at 600 Congress Avenue, Suite C150, and is taking over the former Athenian Bar & Grill, which closed in 2018.
