Driver killed in single-vehicle wreck in Habersham County

Austin Christopher Wilkes, 24, died when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into an embankment and overturned.
Georgia State Patrol Post 7 soldiers in Toccoa responded to a single vehicle crash on GA 255 Alternate at around 10 p.m. Oct. 1.
According to State Patrol, Wilkes was traveling south in a 1992 Chevrolet Silverado when he got off the curb. He was thrown and fatally injured when the vehicle overturned.
The accident temporarily blocked all lanes as soldiers investigated the crash and rescue workers cleared the scene.

Wilkes’ dog Remi was with him at the time of the wreck. She survived but is now missing.
“That was all his pride and joy and the last we got of him,” says Wilkes’ sister Ansley.
Family members spotted Remi on Saturday morning, October 2, on Highway 255 on Deerwalk Drive near the scene of the accident, but were unable to catch up with her. Friends and neighbors have posted leaflets from the missing dog in the area.
The red-nosed pit bull wore a collar with Austin Wilkes’s name and phone number on it. The family asks people to look out for Remi. If you see them please call Ansley Wilkes at 706-768-5248 or call the number on their tag.
