AUSTIN, Texas – Texas lawmakers now know when they will return to Austin.
On Tuesday afternoon, Governor Greg Abbott convened a third special meeting. It is scheduled to start on September 20 at 10 a.m.
As expected, lawmakers will have to redraw political maps with the new census data in a process called redistribution.
But the governor put a few other items on the agenda.
They’ll focus on how American Rescue Plan funds are distributed, legislation about whether state or local authorities can mandate COVID-19 vaccines, a law vetoed by the governor known as the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act will, as well as legislation that would force public school students to exercise based on their gender at birth as opposed to their gender identity.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick asked the Governor to get transgender sports legislation in motion after bills on the matter died in the House of Representatives during the regular session and the first two special sessions on the matter.
Patrick came to KVUE on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before Governor Abbott’s announcement.
“Look, it’s just basic fairness,” Patrick said. “We’re not trying to be against anyone or their lifestyle – that’s your choice. But we cannot take away the rights of girls and women either, and allowing boys to play girls’ sports is just unfair. Boys can run faster, hit the ball longer when they play softball, hit three-point shots, and ricochet better. You can beat girls in athletics, as I said, they can run faster. You can beat them in wrestling – it happened in Texas – because they’re strong. It’s just not fair. “
He added that failure to pass the law could hurt a student’s future.
“I mean, I have boys and girls in my family, children and grandchildren,” said Patrick. “Boys have an unfair advantage, and it’s not right that girls don’t get a place on the team, don’t get a chance to play, don’t get a scholarship. It’s just not right. And that’s why Bill is important to me.” It’s right for girls and women. “
