With real estate prices soaring, becoming a homeowner in Austin was a dream a mother of two would never think of.
AUSTIN, Texas – Thanks to Austin Habitat for Humanity, 11 families now own affordable townhouses in the Mueller community. This comes at a time when the average Austin home price is over $ 500,000.
Tabitha Perez and her two boys were one of the families who moved into their new home in June.
AJ, 7, loves to count and his older brother Xavier loves climbing.
“This is where we hang out,” said AJ in the park.
The two spend a lot of time in the park directly across from their new home.
“I’ve been to the park so many times and met so many people that I’ve actually lost,” said AJ.
While they love the park, the townhouse is their favorite part when moving.
“We have three bedrooms, two and a half baths,” said Mother Tabitha Perez.
This is the first house Perez owns.
“I thought I’d be stuck with renting forever,” said Perez.
After hundreds of hours of volunteer work and other qualifications, Perez was able to purchase a home through Austin Habitat for Humanity’s Affordable Homeownership Program.

“It was great,” Perez. “Without this program we wouldn’t have had this option, I don’t think so. And the price in Austin is rising – so expensive now. I don’t think we would have held out too long in Austin.” . “
How affordable are these houses? Habitat for Humanity sold them for just over $ 185,000. The average home price in Austin is $ 500,000. In the Mueller community, some homes sell for over $ 800,000 to $ 1 million.
Michael Hsu Office of Architecture partnered with the nonprofit to build their first multi-family townhouses in Austin. Habitat for Humanity traditionally builds single-family homes.
“The ability to bring denser products into town is really key to offering affordable housing close to town so people who live and work in Austin can be close to their jobs and avoid long commutes,” said Phyllis Snodgrass, CEO of Austin Habitat for Humanity. ”
