The building in which the Far Out Lounge is now located has been “something” since 1908, said owner Pedro Carvalho.
Legend has it that it was a meeting place for Newton Gang train robbers in the 1920s, Carvalho said. Around 50 years later, greats like Willie Nelson and Janis Joplin performed there.
When Carvalho set his sights on the site in 2019, it had been empty for a few years. Now the large outdoor concert space is also the permanent home of five food trucks serving lobster, Mexican food, French fried chicken, Italian sandwiches, and fried chicken. The interior is decorated with modern mid-century furniture and a ceiling that is slowly filling up with posters for the venue’s past events.
“Our biggest goal here is to become an integral part of Austin – and South Austin in particular – and to homogenize our ideas with the rest of the neighborhood,” said Carvalho.
The venue’s first “real show” for the open air stage coincided with the biggest rainstorm Carvalho remembers of his decade in Austin.
The Far Out refunded the crowd’s tickets, but about 40 people stayed inside, and the proposed band Wild Child decided to get a mini-show going in the small interior space.
“Everyone takes off their shoes and sits in a powder wow. We all have a couple of beers and listen to this band, ”said Carvalho. “It was the coolest experience and it had nothing to do with money. It felt really special. “
Carvahlo has plans to expand. Ultimately, he hopes the venue can become an integral part of the South Congress community.
