Fat City’s at Yard Bar, Chicken Salad Shoppe Embiggens, Try Hard Succeeds, and There’s Austin Oysters for Everyone: All the news that’s fit to get your taste buds quivering – Food

Here’s some of what’s happening in Austin’s huge and multivalent culinary scene, as evidenced by numerous PR releases, official posts, words on the digital street, and even the occasional (verified) IRL tap.
Yes, it is your food news buffet for the last weekend of July and the first week of August.
People and dogs are happy: It’s Fat City time in the Yard Bar!
The team behind the Asian fusion favorite in Austin, the Peached Tortilla, has opened their new Fat City store in the Yard Bar, that dog-friendly pub on 6700 Burnet Rd. Well, okay, this Fat City concept isn’t exactly new – it was spawned by the pandemic last year – but its pop-ups (with smashed beef or fried chicken sliders and soft ice cream) were made by the community that chef honore Eric Silverstein made a permanent fixture. Together, Fat City and Yard Bar now offer a family-friendly, open-air neighborhood meeting place: the courtyard and parking lot have been renovated; four of the original putt-putt holes on the property have been modernized; There is a children’s playground with lawn and games and a covered trellis; And they painted the building red, red, red. And what about those canines anyway? Listen: There are also special dog-friendly menu items for furry friends to snack on.
Remember last year when we first heard about Ivan and Molly Mills’ Chicken Salad Shoppe and thought it was some kind of pop-up novelty? Then we tried the place during those heady days of gathering food and sheltering at home and were blown away by the variety and excellence of the chicken salads and side dishes and half pound cookies. And we told everyone we know, and they left, and now, hurray! Chicken Salad Shoppe grew out of its ghost kitchen beginnings and has moved to a larger retail (with seating for dining, omg) restaurant located on the corner of the Furniture Mall of Texas at 12901 N. IH-35 “You can walk into the restaurant directly from the cafe entrance,” they tell us, “or take a stroll through the Furniture Mall and enjoy the best chicken salad while you sit back in one of Austin’s finest lounge chairs. “
Doesn’t every brewery now have a great food trailer in their parking lot? Fairweather Cider at 10609 Metric definitely does it, having just watched the chicken-fantastic Spicy Boys and their popular menu of sandwiches (OG & Hot Gai), wings (boneless and cauliflower with a sauce of your choice) and side dishes (tater tots, Som Tam, Roti Panang Curry or Roti Chicken Curry) and a new dessert (Makrut Lime Leaf Cheesecake). Jesus Christ, what, macrut lime leaf cheesecake? Oooh baby we’re glad everyone can eat there now instead of waiting for it to open in September.
Keep your hands in the air for coffee and dinner at DJ-Forward Try Hard Coffee Roasters
Try Hard Coffee Roasters, this wild coffee shop run by Raechel Hurd, Gabrielle Rose, and Jon French is finally back, tossing coffee and homemade food out of their remodeled venue at 1115 E. 11th, showcasing a menu from seasoned chefs Angel Medina and Cameron Kisel. Mmmmm, definitely not your standard coffee shop dish: mushroom toast (canned mushrooms, labneh, za’atar, pickled lemon, Thai basil, served on koji sourdough); a hash bowl (roasted potatoes, black beans, soft-boiled egg, escabeche, queso fresco); and so on, ad infini-yum. In addition, the music-oriented, HAAM-supporting Joint hosts DJ residences from its own DJ booth and otherwise welcomes its customers with a steady stream of music from their extensive vinyl collection.
Ah, the virtue of shellfish: local mollusc suppliers Austin Oyster Co. have partnered with Ferda Farms of Maine to develop and grow the “Austin Oyster” exclusively for their customers – making Austin Oyster Co. the only service company in Texas with a farm on the east coast for the cultivation and sale of oysters. (Which, in turn, makes for darn good food in our opinion.) Note: The Austin Oyster is available for home service or events, and can also be found doing monthly appearances at The Austin Winery and Idle Hands weekly Oyster Sunday at the St. Cecilia Hotel and at Still Austin Whiskey Co. during the fortnightly Happy Hours on Friday.
Texsueño – the food truck recently named Best Tex-Mex by Austin Monthly – is now in operation outside the Eastside Bar High Noon at 2000 E. Cesar Chavez. Brandon Martin’s rolling roadhouse with badass noms (especially those crunchy tacos made with freshly nixtamalized corn tortillas) has already updated its original offering and, we hear, is working on a full brunch menu.
OMG, delicious: Hey Cupcake !, Austin’s legendary cupcake trailer, returns with classic flavors and new delicacies (orange scones, chai-spiced chocolate chips, banana-nut muffins, even hearty breakfast tacos) at a relaunch celebration Returned $ 1 mini cupcakes. Live music, face painting, loads of freebies and more this Saturday, July 31st – that’s 11 am-1pm, at the Native Hostel (807 E. 4th). Aaaaaaaund, beware: these shrewd pastry chefs are also working on opening a separate shop.
