First 3D printed homes in the US for sale in East Austin
Austin-based printing technology company ICON and developer 3Strands have teamed up to build homes that are unique in the market. FOX 7 Austin’s Dave Froehlich has details.
Austin, Texas – There are some new homes for sale in East Austin and they are unlike any other on the market.
Austin-based construction technology company ICON and Kansas City developer 3Strands have teamed up to create 3D printed homes at East 17th Street Residences. The houses are the first of their kind in the United States
Says Conner Jenkins, Senior Project Manager at ICON, “The experience you have when you live (the) home is probably no different from the apartment you could live in or the apartment someone else lives in could.”
The experience may be the same, but the construction of the houses was very different.
“This is a technological feat that wasn’t easy, but it took a lot of intelligence and effort, and we’re so proud of the end product,” says Jenkins.
East Austin does 3D with ICON and 3Strands
ICON has partnered with developer 3Strands to introduce the first series of 3D printed homes available for mass market in East called East 17th Street Residences. FOX 7 Austin’s Casey Claiborne speaks to Dmitri Julius and learns all the details.
ICON used its 3D printing technology to print the first floor of houses with a proprietary concrete-like substance it calls “Lavacrete”, which Jenkins calls “a great material that carries us into the future”.
Jenkins says “Lavacrete” is a material with excellent thermal properties that can be used to increase efficiency in homes. He says the material also helps make homes more resilient and withstand fire, floods, and other natural disasters better than traditionally built homes.
The East 17th Street Residences have four houses and they range in size from approximately 1,000 square feet to 2,000 square feet. All houses were printed in less than a week.
“In addition to cutting costs, we also want to cut waste and time on schedule, which is critical for anyone trying to sell homes in this or any market,” says Jenkins.
3D in-house printer ICON introduces the new “Vulcan II” printer
“Vulcan II is the moment when 3D printing is no longer just a prototype, but a product,” said Jason Ballard, Austin-based CEO and co-founder of ICON.
The rethinking of living has led 3Strands to collaborate with ICON on this project.
Gary O’Dell, CEO of 3Strands, says, “We have a housing shortage in this country and it’s basically a supply problem and we are just passionate about finding the best and smartest technologies out of the lab and in the field to solve this problem pick up.” and so this project was perfect. “
The houses were designed by Logan Architecture, and Austin-based designer Claire Zinnecker also joined the project to help with the interior design and lighting selection. The rooms have a modernized West Texas feel with natural woods, metal surfaces and earthy tile colors.
“We wanted to show that with 3D printed technology you can build houses that anyone can live in, and when you look around you see really great surfaces and bright lighting and just a really livable home and we’re really proud of that Final product, “says O’Dell.
Austin ICON shoots for the moon
ICON is an Austin-based construction technology company. They 3D printed affordable homes here in the Austin area. But now they have received funding from NASA to research how their technology works on the moon. Jason Ballard, CEO of ICON, spoke to Casey Claiborne of Good Day Austin about the next steps.
ICON also hopes it can help revolutionize construction jobs and find a solution to the affordable housing crisis both here in Austin and in other parts of the US
“Our hearts break for the community, especially those around us who do not have dignified homes, so our mission is to meet that need and meet it with excitement, energy and courage,” says Jenkins.
Two of the houses were sold and two more were launched on August 31st.
