Private investor in Fort Worth John C. GoffA legend in North Texas real estate, can add another accolade to its productive portfolio. He and three other Dallas-Fort Worth business tycoons – Mark Cuban, Morton Meyerson, and Randall Stephenson – were inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame, which was recently honored at a dinner held at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.
Also included are Austin billionaire John Paul DeJoria, who made his fortune through hair products and high-end tequila, and Houston investment manager Gerald Smith.
Goff has lived in Fort Worth since 1981 and got his big break investing from guru Richard Rainwater. He is best known as the co-founder, vice chairman and CEO of Crescent Real Estate, which Morgan Stanley bought in 2007 for $ 6.5 billion. Two years later he bought the company back in partnership with Barclays Capital.
Today Goff is Chairman of Crescent Real Estate and Contango Oil & Gas, based in Houston. He owns The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dallas and the Fort Worth-based spa company Canyon Ranch.
Crescent Real Estate is the powerhouse running a large mixed-use project in Fort Worth’s cultural district that will include a top boutique hotel with a chef-run restaurant; luxurious living; Office building; and a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center.
“We’re going to build the best hotel in town that we hope will become the living room of Fort Worth,” said Goff when announcing the development.
Goff appeared at number 2,263 on Forbes’ 2021 Billionaires List with a net worth of $ 1.3 billion.
“He is currently focused on investing in aerospace, energy, entertainment, real estate, and wellness,” says his Hall of Fame biography.
Something else about the other new Hall of Famers:
Dallas billionaire Mark Cuban, is, of course, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, as well as Chairman and CEO of AXS TV and one of the investors in ABC’s Shark Tank.
“Mark has been a born businessman since he was twelve. Selling garbage bags door-to-door was the early seed for long-term success,” says his Hall of Fame biography.
His latest initiative is the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company, a new venture aiming to disrupt large pharmaceutical companies and keep prescription drug costs down.
Dallas private investor Morton H. Meyerson – best known as the namesake of the Meyerson Symphony Center – is the former chairman and CEO of EDS, based in Plano, and former chief technology officer at GM. He currently chairs 2M Companies, a family office he founded in 1983, and the Morton H. Meyerson Family Foundation. He was born in Fort Worth.
Dallas manager Randall Stephenson is the former chairman and CEO of Dallas-based technology, media and telecommunications giant AT&T.

Houston Investment Manager Gerald Smith is Chairman and CEO of Smith Graham & Co., an investment management firm. He is also a board member of New York Life Insurance and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and chairman of the Texas Southern University Foundation.
Austin hair care guru John Paul DeJoria and hairdresser Paul Mitchell converted a partially loaned $ 700 in 1980 to John Paul Mitchell Systems, based in Beverly Hills, California, which now sells the largest private line of hair care products for salons. In 1989 DeJoria co-founded Patrón, the first ultra-premium tequila. Patrón, now the world’s leading ultra-premium tequila, was sold to Bacardi for $ 5.1 billion in 2018.
“John Paul DeJoria’s rags-to-riches biography is an example of the American dream. After he was homeless, he struggled against all odds to be successful, founded several global companies while always supporting his motto “Success is failure,” ”says his biography.
