A local Chinese grocery delivery startup that serves conventional Sino-American dishes and is backed by well-funded investors makes a foray into South Austin.
The news is driving: Tso Chinese Delivery opens its third Austin location from South Congress and Oltorf on Monday.
- Tso opened his first post at Cherrywood in 2017 and a second at the Arboretum in 2019.
There are many more daring – and arguably tastier – Chinese menus in the Austin area, but Tso, which doesn’t have a sit-down restaurant, is the kind of throwback hole in the wall that stand-bys like General Tso’s Chicken, Fried Rice, and Lo. delivers my.
Between the lines: However, unlike your classic Chinese-American restaurant, this eatery has corporate money behind it. The expansion to South Austin was supported by a $ 2 million seed funding round in 2019 led by Walter Robb, former Co-CEO of Whole Foods. Brett Hurt, co-founder of Bazaarvoice and data.world; and Brian Spaly, founder of Bonobos and Trunk Club.
- In a way, it’s really a digital company masquerading as a Chinese delivery company.
- The company’s business card is a specially developed order tracking program that notifies customers when their order has been received, is being cooked, is on the way and is at the door. With its own fleet of delivery vehicles, the company has made a strategic decision not to use third-party services like Uber Eats or DoorDash.
Remarkable: Tso was recently named one of the top fast food brands by QSR (Quick Service Restaurant Magazine).
